Why Your Fire VFX Looks Fake

Need Help with your VFX Project? Contact me at visualfxmagic@gmail.com The fire was never the problem.
Almost every fake-looking fire comp fails for the same reason: the element is added and nothing in the plate reacts to it. No key on the face, no rim on the jaw, no bounce on the wall behind. Your brain reads a bright object sitting in front of a scene instead of a light source inside it.
The fix, in order: 1. Solid or adjustment layer, sample the flame's core colour (~1900K) 2. Mask it to fall where the flame would actually reach 3. Keyframe or wiggle the opacity to match the flame's own flicker 4. Add the bounce on the background LAST — it's the cheapest and it sells the shot the most
Same rule applies to muzzle flashes, screens, explosions and neon.
