Rotoscoping

Rotoscoping is creating a matte — a per-frame cut-out — by hand, so an element can be isolated from its background. You need it whenever an automated key will not hold: no green screen was shot, the subject and background share tones, there is heavy motion blur, hair or fur detail, semi-transparent material, or objects crossing in front of the subject. It is the fallback that always works, which is why it is still the backbone of the industry.

Roto is quoted per shot after triage, because complexity varies enormously — a locked-off figure against a contrasting wall and a fast-moving subject with hair detail and motion blur are different orders of work. Shots are graded easy, medium and hard before quoting, and complex shots typically run 2–5 days each. Send the sequence and you get a per-shot breakdown, not a flat guess.
