Green Screen Removal & Chroma Keying
Clean keys from the screen you actually shot, not the one you wanted.
Most green screen footage is not lit the way the tutorials assume. The screen is uneven, there are shadows in the corners, the subject stood too close and picked up spill, and the hair and motion blur fall apart the moment a keyer touches them.
A key is not a button. Getting a matte that holds through movement, keeps fine hair, survives motion blur and still sits correctly in the new background is a series of passes, and most of them are edge work rather than keying.

How the work is done
- 01
Assess the screen
The plate is checked for evenness, spill, shadow falloff and how much of the subject actually needs a hand-drawn matte rather than a key.
- 02
Screen correction
Uneven lighting, wrinkles and blotching are evened out first, because a corrected screen keys cleanly where a raw one never will.
- 03
Key and hold out
Primary key in After Effects or SilhouetteFX, with garbage mattes and holdouts for the areas a key alone cannot solve.
- 04
Edges and despill
Hair, motion blur and transparency recovered by hand where needed, then despill and colour decontamination so no green survives in the edges.
- 05
Integrate and deliver
Light wrap, grain match and edge treatment against the new background, delivered as ProRes, EXR, DPX or DNxHR, at source resolution and frame rate.
The key is the easy part
Anyone can pull a matte on a well-lit screen. What separates a usable key from an unusable one is everything around it: the spill still sitting in the hair, the motion blur that the keyer turned into a hard edge, the semi-transparent fabric that went solid, and the fact that a perfectly cut subject still reads as fake when no light from the new environment touches it. Those are edge and integration problems, not keying problems, and each one is treated as its own pass here. That is also why a shot keyed in one click and a shot keyed properly look completely different at full speed.
Green Screen Removal & Chroma Keying — questions
01Can you key footage shot on a badly lit green screen?

Can you key footage shot on a badly lit green screen?
Usually yes. Uneven lighting, wrinkles, shadowed corners and spill are the normal condition rather than the exception, and they are handled with a screen correction pass before any keying happens. What genuinely limits a key is heavy compression, a subject wearing the same colour as the screen, or motion blur so severe that no edge information survives. Send a sample frame and you will get an honest answer before you order.
02Do you deliver mattes or fully composited shots?

Do you deliver mattes or fully composited shots?
Either. Alpha channels, separate mattes, or fully keyed and integrated plates composited into your new background, whichever your pipeline needs. Deliverables come in ProRes 4444, EXR, DPX or DNxHR at source resolution and frame rate, to your naming convention and colour space.
03What software do you use for green screen removal?

What software do you use for green screen removal?
Adobe After Effects as the primary compositing environment, with SilhouetteFX for hand-drawn mattes and edge work and Mocha Pro for planar tracking. Nuke is available through the VFX Magic team when a project requires it.
04What if there is no green screen at all?

What if there is no green screen at all?
Then the subject is separated by hand with rotoscoping instead of keying. That is slower per frame but it works on any footage, and it is often the right answer for shots where the screen was too compromised to key cleanly. Both approaches are frequently combined within a single shot.
