VFX Compositing

Every layer, one photographed image.

Compositing is the final assembly — where plates, CG, matte paintings, FX elements, roto and clean-up all become a single image that looks like it was photographed rather than built. It is the pass where a shot either holds together or quietly announces itself as visual effects.

It is also where every earlier decision comes due. A soft matte, a drifting track, a clean plate built across too few frames — none of them look like problems until compositing, when they all do. VFX Magic has been finishing shots since 2012.

How the work is done

  1. 01

    Assemble

Plates, mattes, CG renders and elements brought together against the camera solve.

  2. 02

    Match the camera

Lens distortion, depth of field and motion blur applied to every added element so it shares the plate’s optics.

  3. 03

    Match the light

Colour, contrast, direction and bounce matched, with light wrap so foreground edges pick up the background behind them.

  4. 04

    Integrate contact

Shadows, reflections, interaction and occlusion — the cues that make an element sit in the scene instead of on it.

  5. 05

    Unify

A single matched grain pass across the whole frame so no layer reads as separate. Then full-speed review.

Straight answer

The last 30%

AI now gets a lot of shots to roughly 70% quickly — generation, first-pass integration, rough lighting. Work that used to take a day can take minutes, and that is genuinely useful. The last 30% is where compositing lives: edge treatment where an element meets the plate, grain matching so it does not float, the tiny timing lag between what an object does and what its reflection does, light wrap that picks up the background behind a foreground edge. None of that is a prompt. AI collapses the setup and leaves the craft exactly where it was — if you could not tell a good matte from a bad one before, you still cannot, you just get to the bad one faster.

VFX Compositing — questions

01

What does a VFX compositor actually do?

add

A compositor takes every separate layer of a shot — the filmed plate, CG renders, matte paintings, FX elements, mattes and clean-up — and combines them into one image that reads as photographed. That means matching the optics (lens distortion, depth of field, motion blur), matching the light (colour, contrast, direction, bounce and light wrap), adding contact cues like shadows and reflections, and unifying everything under a single grain pass.

02

How long does VFX compositing take per shot?

add

Full compositing with CG integration and multi-plate work typically runs 5–15 days per shot. Simpler comps are considerably faster. The variable is rarely the compositing itself — it is the quality of what arrives: solid mattes and a reliable camera solve make a shot straightforward, while soft mattes and a drifting track turn the same shot into a rebuild.

03

Can you integrate AI-generated elements into real footage?

add

Yes — this is an active specialism here. AI generation gets an element to roughly 70% fast, then it needs the same integration any CG element needs: edge treatment where it meets the plate, grain match so it does not float, correct motion blur, and light that matches the scene. AI-generated elements also tend to carry subtle frame-to-frame inconsistency that has to be stabilised before they will hold in motion.

04

Do you work as an overflow compositor for studios?

add

Yes. Shots are delivered to your naming convention, colour space and format spec as ProRes, EXR, DPX or DNxHR at source resolution and frame rate, transferred via Frame.io, Aspera, Dropbox or WeTransfer. Working from Lahore (UTC+5) means shots sent at the end of a US or UK day come back with a pass on them by the next morning.
