Set Extension

You could afford to build the first three metres. We build the rest.

Set extension is how a corner of a build becomes a whole street, how a two-storey facade becomes a tower, and how a small stage becomes somewhere the production could never have afforded to shoot.

It is one of the few VFX techniques that pays for itself directly. Every metre of set that does not have to be constructed, dressed, lit and struck is budget that stays in the production.

  • check_smallEdge blending where the practical build meets the extension

How the work is done

  1. 01

    Find the seam

The line where the practical set stops is identified first, because the join is where a set extension succeeds or fails.

  2. 02

    Track the camera

3D solve in PF Track, or a planar track in Mocha Pro for locked and simple moves, so the extension sits in the same space as the plate.

  3. 03

    Build the environment

Matte painting, projected stills or 3D geometry depending on how much the camera moves and how much parallax the shot reveals.

  4. 04

    Match the light

Direction, colour temperature, haze and falloff matched to the photographed set, then atmosphere added so distance reads correctly.

  5. 05

    Blend and finish

Edge blending, grain match and final grade across the join, delivered as ProRes, EXR, DPX or DNxHR, at source resolution and frame rate.

Straight answer

The join, and the parallax

Two things give a set extension away. The first is the seam: a practical wall that meets a digital one with a slightly different grain structure, contrast falloff or edge sharpness reads as a sticker even when the painting behind it is beautiful. The second is parallax. A locked-off camera forgives almost anything, but the moment the camera tracks, near and far elements have to separate at the correct rate, and an extension built as a flat card will slide against the set it is bolted to. That is why the camera move is scoped before the painting is, not after.

Set Extension — questions

01

What is set extension in VFX?

add

Set extension is the technique of photographing a partial set and building the rest digitally, so a small practical build becomes a complete environment. It is used to extend buildings upward, continue streets, replace what sits beyond a window, or place a real set inside a location the production could not reach. The photographed portion stays real, which is what keeps the result believable.

02

How much of a set do you need to have built?

add

Enough for the actors to interact with and for the light to be real, which in practice usually means the ground plane and whatever anyone touches. Beyond that it depends on the camera move: a locked-off shot can be extended from very little, while a tracking shot needs more practical reference so the digital portion has something to lock to.

03

Does the camera need to be locked off?

add

No. Moving cameras are handled with a 3D camera solve in PF Track so the extension holds correct parallax through the move. A move does make the shot more expensive than a locked-off one, because the extension has to be built with real depth rather than as a flat matte painting, so the move is scoped before the work is quoted.

04

Is set extension cheaper than building the set?

add

Usually, and often by a wide margin, because construction, dressing, lighting and strike costs scale with physical size while a digital extension does not. It is priced per shot rather than per square metre of screen, and you will be given the honest number before committing, including which shots genuinely need the extension and which do not.
