Match Moving & Motion Tracking

Make the digital move exactly like the real.

Match moving reconstructs the real camera inside the computer — its position, rotation and lens — so anything added later moves as though it had been there when the scene was shot. Motion tracking does the same for an object in frame rather than the camera itself.

It is the invisible foundation under almost every shot with a digital element in it. When it is right, nobody thinks about it. When it is a few pixels wrong, the CG slides against the plate, and no amount of lighting or grading will rescue the shot.

How the work is done

  1. 01

    Assess the plate

Shots are checked for the things that break solves before work starts — motion blur, rolling shutter, reflective or featureless surfaces, and moving subjects that will poison an automatic track.

  2. 02

    Solve

3D camera solve in PF Track, or a planar track in Mocha Pro when the shot only needs a surface rather than a full camera.

  3. 03

    Undistort

Lens distortion is solved and removed so CG lines up against a rectilinear plate, then reapplied at the end so the result matches the original optics.

  4. 04

    Refine by hand

Automatic solves get the shot close. Manual point work on the frames the solver struggled with is what takes it from close to locked.

  5. 05

    Prove it

A test object is rendered into the plate and reviewed at full speed. A solve is only finished when something sitting in the scene stays put.

Straight answer

Why an almost-right solve is worse than no solve

A camera solve that is nearly correct does not announce itself. It passes review at the tracking stage, then surfaces three weeks later when a compositor cannot make a CG element sit and nobody can say whether the fault is the solve, the matte, or the integration. Automatic solvers are genuinely good now, and they are also confidently wrong on exactly the shots that matter — reflective surfaces, featureless walls, heavy motion blur, a subject moving through frame that the solver quietly treats as static background. The work is knowing which shots to distrust, and fixing them by hand before they go downstream.

Match Moving & Motion Tracking — questions

01

What is the difference between match moving and motion tracking?

add

Match moving reconstructs the camera itself in 3D — where it was, how it rotated, what lens it had — so CG can be placed anywhere in the scene and will hold. Motion tracking follows a specific element within the frame in 2D, which is what you need for a screen insert, a sign replacement, or attaching a graphic to a moving object. Most shots with CG need match moving; most inserts need tracking.

02

Can you track shots with heavy motion blur or no tracking markers?

add

Usually yes, though these are the shots that take real time. Heavy motion blur destroys the sharp features a solver needs, and unmarked, featureless surfaces give it nothing to hold onto. Both are solved with manual point work and, where the geometry allows, planar tracking of surfaces rather than points. What matters is being told up front that a shot is in this category, so it gets scheduled honestly.

03

What format do you deliver tracking data in?

add

Camera and object solves are exported for whatever your pipeline reads — Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, After Effects, or a standard interchange format on request. Undistort and redistort passes are supplied alongside, plus a test render showing the solve holding, so the data can be verified before anyone builds on it.

04

Do you handle rolling shutter and lens distortion?

add

Yes, and both are treated as their own steps rather than ignored. Lens distortion is solved and removed so CG aligns against a rectilinear plate, then reapplied at the end to match the original optics. Rolling shutter from CMOS cameras is compensated in the solve; skipping it is a common cause of solves that look right on static frames and drift during fast pans.

Clients come to VFX Magic looking for this work under a lot of different names — match moving, matchmove artist, 3D camera tracking, camera solve, motion tracking, object tracking, planar tracking, lens distortion solve. If you are describing a problem rather than a technique, that is fine too: describe the shot and you will get an honest answer about whether it can be fixed.
