Video Clean-Up
The fixes nobody is supposed to notice.
Video clean-up is everything that has to leave the frame before a shot can be delivered — the safety wire, the C-stand in the mirror, the crew reflection in a car door, the boom dipping into the top of frame, the tracking markers on a green wall, the blemish that only shows up on the 4K master.
Done properly, clean-up is invisible: the audience never knows a fix happened, and the grade behaves exactly as if the plate were clean to begin with. Done badly, it smears, chatters between frames, or leaves a patch that breathes against the grain. VFX Magic has been doing this since 2012.

How the work is done
- 01
Plate review
Every frame is checked before quoting, so the shots that will actually be difficult are known up front rather than discovered halfway through.
- 02
Track
Planar or 3D camera track in Mocha Pro or PF Track, so patches stay locked to the surface as the camera moves.
- 03
Paint and patch
Clean-plate reconstruction in After Effects and SilhouetteFX — cloning from adjacent frames wherever a genuine clean background exists.
- 04
Grain and edge match
Regrain to the original plate. This is the step that separates an invisible fix from a patch that visibly breathes.
- 05
Full-speed review
Checked at speed and frame by frame. Clean-up that survives a still but flickers in motion is not finished.
Where clean-up actually fails
Almost never on the frame you are looking at. It fails in motion — a patch that sits perfectly on frame 1 starts to swim by frame 40 because the track drifted, or the regrain is a touch too clean so the fixed region reads as softer than everything around it. The other classic failure is a fix that looks flawless on a monitor and then falls apart the moment a colourist lifts the shadows. That is why every patch here is grain-matched to the source plate and reviewed at full speed, not just on stills.
Video Clean-Up — questions
01What is video clean-up in VFX?

What is video clean-up in VFX?
Video clean-up is the removal of unwanted elements from a filmed plate so the shot can be delivered as if they were never there — safety wires and rigs, tracking markers, boom mics, crew and equipment reflections, set dressing mistakes, and cosmetic blemishes. The goal is invisibility: the audience should never be able to tell a fix happened, and the repaired area should behave identically to the rest of the frame through colour grading.

How much does video clean-up cost?
Clean-up is quoted per shot, not per hour, because a two-second wire removal against a plain sky and a two-second removal against moving foliage are completely different jobs. Send the footage or a shot description and VFX Magic returns a fixed quote, typically within 24 hours, with no upfront fee. Simple clean-up generally runs 1–3 days per minute of footage.
03Can you remove wires and rigs from 4K and 6K footage?

Can you remove wires and rigs from 4K and 6K footage?
Yes. Work is done at source resolution and delivered at source resolution — there is no downscaling step. Higher-resolution plates actually make some clean-up easier (more detail to clone from) and some harder (every imperfection in the patch is more visible), which is why grain matching is handled as its own pass rather than an afterthought.
04Will the clean-up survive colour grading?

Will the clean-up survive colour grading?
That is the test that matters, and it is the reason regrain is treated as a separate step. A patch that matches on a flat, ungraded plate can separate visibly once a colourist lifts the shadows or pushes contrast. Patches here are grain-matched to the original plate so the fixed region responds to a grade the same way the surrounding frame does.
