AI VFX & Cinematic Effects

Anyone can generate an AI video. Almost no one can finish it.

Generative tools produce footage fast, and almost all of it arrives with the same tells: warping edges, hallucinated detail, plastic light, and a look that reads as "AI" from across the room. Finishing is what closes that gap — the same pipeline a studio shot goes through, applied to generated material.

That means artifact cleanup, stabilising frame-to-frame inconsistency, a real colour grade, matched film grain, and hand compositing so the element actually sits in the shot. The point is not that the footage was generated. The point is that it looks finished.

How the work is done

  1. 01

    Direct the generation

Text-to-video, image-to-video or video-to-video through Runway, Higgsfield and ComfyUI — driven by your idea, script or reference rather than a single hopeful prompt.

  2. 02

    Clean the artifacts

Warping edges, hallucinated hands and detail, and the frame-to-frame inconsistency that reads as boiling are fixed rather than left in.

  3. 03

    Grade

A real colour grade replaces the flat, over-saturated default look that most generated footage arrives with.

  4. 04

    Composite by hand

Where generated elements meet real footage, they get the same treatment any CG element gets — edge work, light match, correct motion blur and contact shadows.

  5. 05

    Grain and finish

Matched film grain and lens character across the whole frame, so nothing reads as separate and nothing reads as synthetic.

Straight answer

The last 30% is still the whole job

AI gets a shot to roughly 70% in minutes — generation, first-pass integration, rough lighting. Work that used to take a day now takes very little, and that is genuinely useful. The last 30% has not moved at all: edge treatment where an element meets the plate, grain matching so it does not float, the small timing lag between what an object does and what its reflection does, light wrap picking up the background behind a foreground edge. None of that is a prompt. AI collapses the setup and leaves the craft exactly where it was — if you could not tell a good matte from a bad one before, you still cannot, you just reach the bad one faster. A real compositor, not a prompt seller.

AI VFX & Cinematic Effects — questions

01

Why does AI-generated video look fake, and can it be fixed?

add

Usually four things at once: warping and hallucinated detail around edges and hands, frame-to-frame inconsistency that reads as boiling, flat over-saturated colour, and no grain or lens character so the image looks synthetically clean. All four are fixable in post — that is exactly what finishing is. The artifacts get cleaned, the sequence gets stabilised, a real grade goes on, and matched grain unifies the frame.

02

Can you integrate AI-generated elements into my real footage?

add

Yes, and it needs the same treatment any CG element needs: edge work where it meets the plate, a light match to the scene, correct motion blur, contact shadows, and grain so it does not float. Generated elements carry one extra problem — subtle frame-to-frame inconsistency — which has to be stabilised before the element will hold in motion at all.

03

Which AI video tools do you use?

add

Runway, Higgsfield and ComfyUI for generation, plus generative fill, AI relight and inpainting where they help. Those cover text-to-video, image-to-video and video-to-video. Everything after generation — cleanup, tracking, grading, compositing and grain — is done by hand in After Effects, Mocha Pro and SilhouetteFX, which is what separates a finished shot from a generated clip.

04

How is this different from using an AI video generator myself?

add

The generator is the first 70%, and you can absolutely do that part yourself. The difference is what happens next: 16+ years of compositing applied to cleaning artifacts, stabilising the sequence, grading it, and integrating it so it reads as photographed rather than generated. Complex or multi-shot work gets an honest scope conversation first — you will be told what is realistic before you order, not after.

Also called

Clients come to VFX Magic looking for this work under a lot of different names — AI VFX, AI video finishing, AI artifact cleanup, generative video compositing, AI element integration, cinematic AI video, text to video finishing, image to video compositing. If you are describing a problem rather than a technique, that is fine too: describe the shot and you will get an honest answer about whether it can be fixed.
