Clean Plate Creation

The source every patch downstream is pulled from.

A clean plate is the shot with something taken out of it and the background rebuilt so it is complete and continuous. Compositors patch from it, and almost every removal, replacement and cleanup task depends on one existing.

Clean plates are also the single most common place a pipeline quietly breaks. A plate built across a handful of sampled frames looks fine in review and drifts, flickers or smears the moment the shot plays at speed.

How the work is done

  1. 01

    Scope the range

The full frame range is established with handles, rather than only the frames where the element is most visible.

  2. 02

    Track the background

Planar tracking in Mocha Pro, or a 3D solve in PF Track when the camera move introduces parallax.

  3. 03

    Reconstruct

Background rebuilt from surrounding frames where the information exists, and painted by hand where it does not.

  4. 04

    Grain and continuity check

Grain matched to the plate and the sequence checked for breathing, drift and flicker across the whole range.

  5. 05

    Package

Delivered as ProRes, EXR, DPX or DNxHR, at source resolution and frame rate at source resolution and frame rate, named to your convention.

Straight answer

Why most clean plates fail downstream

The failure is almost never visible at the point the plate is made. It appears weeks later, when a compositor discovers the patch drifts on frame 340 because the plate was only built across frames 1 to 60 and extrapolated from there, or when the repaired region breathes against the surrounding grain. Both come from the same shortcut: sampling frames rather than covering the range. Plates here are built across the full range with handles and reviewed at full speed, because a clean plate that fails is discovered at ten times the cost of building it properly in the first place.

Clean Plate Creation — questions

01

What is a clean plate?

add

A clean plate is a version of a shot with a particular element removed and the background behind it reconstructed so the frame is complete and continuous. Compositors use it as the source they patch from when removing an object, a rig, a marker or a person. Without one, every removal becomes a frame-by-frame paint job.

02

Can you build clean plates when the camera moves?

add

Yes, and it is the more common case. Moving cameras introduce parallax, so the reconstruction has to be correct in three dimensions rather than just patched flat. That is handled with planar tracking in Mocha Pro or a 3D camera solve in PF Track, depending on the shot.

03

Do you deliver clean plates on their own, or the finished removal?

add

Either. Some clients want plates handed to their own compositors as prep, and some want the finished removal delivered. Plates are supplied in your naming convention, colour space and format so they drop straight into an existing pipeline.

04

How many frames do you build the plate across?

add

The full frame range, with handles. Building only across sampled frames is the single most common cause of patches that drift or flicker later in the shot, and it is a false economy because the failure is found downstream when it is far more expensive to fix.
