Eye Replacement

Fix the take you have instead of shooting it again.

The performance was perfect and the actor blinked. The eyeline is a few degrees off. The character needs different coloured eyes, or inhuman ones, or eyes that glow. Eye replacement fixes all of it in post, on the take you already have.

Eyes are the least forgiving thing in visual effects, because human beings are extraordinarily good at reading them. A matte that would pass unnoticed anywhere else on a face becomes obvious on an eye. This is precision work at very small scale.

How the work is done

  1. 01

    Track the eye

The eyeball is tracked as a moving sphere, not a flat patch — it rotates independently of the head, and treating it as flat is why replacements slide.

  2. 02

    Roto the lids and lashes

Lids, lashes and their motion blur get individual mattes so the new eye is occluded exactly as a real one would be.

  3. 03

    Source or build

Replacement eyes taken from an adjacent clean frame where possible; built and lit to the plate where not.

  4. 04

    Catchlights and moisture

The specular highlight and wet sheen are matched to the set lighting — their absence is what makes an eye read as dead.

  5. 05

    Light spill for glow

Luminous eyes throw light onto lids, lashes and cheekbones. Without that spill the glow sits on top of the face rather than in it.

Straight answer

Why eyes are the hardest small fix in VFX

Because everyone is an expert on them. People read eyes constantly and unconsciously, so errors that would pass without comment on a hand or a shoulder are instantly visible on an eye. Three things break an eye replacement: treating the eyeball as a flat patch when it is a rotating sphere, so the replacement slides against the socket; losing the catchlight, which makes the eye read as dead even when everything else is correct; and eyelashes that no longer occlude the eye properly, so lids pass over the replacement wrongly. All three have to be right simultaneously, on every frame, at very small scale.

Eye Replacement — questions

01

Can you remove a blink from a video?

add

Yes — blink removal is one of the most common eye fixes, usually when a performance was otherwise perfect. Open eyes are sourced from adjacent frames of the same shot, tracked onto the closed-eye frames as a rotating sphere rather than a flat patch, and the lids and lashes are rotoscoped so they occlude the replacement correctly. The catchlight is matched so the reconstructed eye reads as alive.

02

How do you change eye colour in video?

add

The iris is tracked through the shot, isolated with a matte that respects lids and lashes, and recoloured in a way that preserves the original luminance structure and the catchlight rather than flatly tinting it. A tint that ignores the specular highlight and the shadow the upper lid casts is what makes recoloured eyes look like contact lenses — which matters if the character is not meant to be wearing any.

03

Can you create glowing or creature eyes in post?

add

Yes. Beyond building the eye itself, the part that sells it is light spill: luminous eyes throw light onto the eyelids, lashes and cheekbones, and that spill has to change as the head turns and the eyes narrow. Without it the glow reads as a graphic sitting on top of the face rather than a light source inside it.

04

Can eyeline be corrected in post?

add

Within limits, yes. Small eyeline corrections — a gaze a few degrees off, an actor looking slightly past their mark — are routine, by tracking and repositioning the iris and pupil within the visible eye. Large corrections eventually require rebuilding the eye rather than adjusting it, because the visible sclera shape changes. Send the shot for an honest assessment before it is budgeted.
