What makes a talking pet actually funny
Timing and restraint. The common failure is animating to volume rather than to sound — a mouth that flaps open and shut whenever the audio is loud, which reads as a puppet rather than speech. Real lip-sync animates to the phonemes, so an "oo" makes a different shape than an "ah", and the brain accepts it as talking. The second thing is knowing when to stop: subtle eyebrow and cheek movement sells a performance far better than an enormous cartoon mouth, and it keeps the animal looking like your animal.
