What one-click stabilisation costs you
An automatic stabiliser solves the wobble by warping the image and cropping the edges, and both bills come due later. Warping bends straight lines, which is invisible on a tree but obvious on a doorframe or a horizon. Cropping quietly reframes the shot, which matters when the delivery spec says the frame is 4K and the director framed the edge deliberately. There is also the opposite failure: stabilising so hard that the intended handheld energy disappears and the shot reads as artificial. The job is to remove only what was unwanted, keep the frame intact, and leave the performance of the camera alone.

In most cases yes. Rather than zooming in to hide the revealed edges, the missing areas are filled from surrounding frames where that information exists, so the delivered frame stays at source resolution. Where the shake is extreme there is a genuine trade-off between how much correction is applied and how much edge has to be reconstructed, and that will be explained before the work starts.

Gate weave is the small side-to-side and vertical drift introduced when film moves through a camera or a scanner. It is subtle on a single frame and very visible in playback, particularly against a locked-off background or a title. It is removed by tracking the frame itself rather than the content and correcting the drift, which is a different process from stabilising handheld camera shake.

Yes. Exposure flicker from shutter and lighting mismatches, and the pulsing that appears under certain artificial lights, are evened out across the sequence. Deflicker is usually combined with stabilisation because both are prep problems that make every downstream task harder if left in.
